If I had a free return ticket to anywhere, I’d go back to New York.
I wouldn’t make a grand plan. I’d probably save a few places on my phone, then wander off somewhere else before lunch. That’s usually how it goes.
New York can be exhausting. Then, for a few minutes, it’s just a city: someone hurrying past, a shop door opening, a patch of light on the pavement. I’d stop for it. Sometimes the picture would be there. Sometimes it wouldn’t. No great tragedy.
I’d walk too far, eat when I remembered, and come home with photographs I wasn’t sure about. I’d go back anyway. I miss being there.
